The electoral field for "bike path mayor" in Somerville, Massachusetts, which started with just two cat-idates, has grown, as has public interest in the race.
In the last three years, I have lost count how many people I've worked closely with has been taken away by Covid. Yesterday, one of the best guys I've worked with seemed fine when he arrived at work. An hour later, the fire department picked him up from the locker room floor.
This is the first time in my long career I have lost people. It was always retirement and they would start drinking and pass away. But this Covid is getting people before they can retire. I was talking with an old friend I started my career with thirty years ago across the country and he said the same thing. He said most of his neighbors are gone. Covid got them.
Why I keep wearing a mask. And interviewing, hiring, and training. This is all new. Hiring new people was only to replace those who retired.
I remember when that clown claimed this was a hoax. It's turned my life upside down and this is the new normal.
Entire books could be, and have been, written about cats in Japanese culture and folklore. Cats in Japan are both revered and feared with the spectrum ranging from kawaii (cute) cat characters, through to terrifying yokai cats who eat humans alive. Because the topic is so vast, this post will just scratch the surface but will include:
~ the legend of the maneki neko
~ an introduction to yokai cats
~ some folktales about cats
~ a recommendation for books and a film
~ a collection of Japanese woodblock art featuring cats.

The central structure visible inside the ring in the Hubble image has now grown to roughly half a light-year across. Most noticeable are two blobs of debris in the center of the supernova remnant racing away from each other at approximately 20 million miles per hour.

“We are witnessing a true reversal of ocean circulation in the Southern Hemisphere—something we’ve never seen before. While the world is debating the potential collapse of the AMOC [Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation] in the North Atlantic, we’re seeing that the SMOC is not just weakening, but has reversed. This could have unprecedented global climate impacts.”
That's a quote from Antonio Turiel, one author of a new paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This study found that since 2016, the water in parts of the Antarctic Ocean is getting more salty. This suggests that the deep ocean circulation in the southern hemisphere—known as the SMOC—has reversed. Instead of sinking into the depths, surface water is now being replaced by deep water coming up to the surface.
This reversal seems to be driving the accelerated melting of sea ice in the Antarctic Ocean:
This web page from the Institut de Ciències del Mar says
"In the long term, this process could double current atmospheric CO₂ concentrations by releasing carbon that has been stored in the deep ocean for centuries—potentially with catastrophic consequences for the global climate."
But never mind, just close your eyes. Don't read this:

Archaeologists have long thought that monumental architecture—large, human-built structures that emphasize visibility—were products of societies with power structures, including social hierarchy, inequality and controlled labor forces.
